INDUSTRIAL SAFETY HELMETS

If you have a Head you need a Helmet or else it belongs to another!!

Safety helmets or Hard Hats are designed to protect the head against falling objects and the side of the head, eyes, and neck from any untoward impacts, bumps, scrapes, and electrical exposure etc.

Covid or No Covid head protection is a must and there to stay for ever as the Industry needs to work to take care of the economy and thus cannot stop it’s functioning. But at the same time accidents of such nature are common in the Industry some are reported and some are not but the fact is that Head being most critical part of the body needs protection all the time.

What Data says?

Statistical data regarding occupational accidents show that the most common cause of head injuries are impacts from falling objects and impact against sharp and hard items. The consequences of such an occurrence depend principally on the kinetic energy of the impact and the shape and hardness of the material coming into contact with the head.

Injuries caused by mechanical factors may affect skin on the head, skull, brain and neck segments of the spinal cord. In extreme cases, these injuries may lead to permanent disability or even a person’s death. However, one must remember that the use of helmets does not eliminate dangerous factors but only reduces the gravity of their consequences.

Industrial Safety Helmets with or without Ventilation is an answer to such problems as it not only protects the user it also helps in saving his / her family from trauma and at the same time helps save the industry from Loss time accidents caused by accidents.

How do they work?

They have a hard Shell which takes care of the Impact, the Inner harness to provide snug fit on the skull as well as it provides cushioning between the inner of the Shell and the Wearer’s head, Chinstrap to hold the Helmet in place by way of Chin and a sweat band to absorb Sweat while in use. The ventilation ports provide air ventilation across the skull while working long hours and amidst high heat areas.

When it follows from a risk assessment the user must wear a safety helmet from the very beginning of his work and for the entire duration of the shift and is responsible for using head protection equipment in accordance with its purpose.

These are governed by different standards both National and International and the most common Helmet is tested at least for Impact, Flammability, Electric Shock, Temperature resistance, Water penetration etc.

What’s more they are easy to maintain and have all parts which can be replaced if worn out hence are economical in long run.

Typical User Segment:

Chemical, Petrochemicals, Fertilizers, Dyes and Intermediates,

Pharmaceutical, Metallurgy, Foundry Industries etc.

Construction Industry

All Maintenance Departments of Hospitals, Offices etc.

Airlines, Railways, Transport Maintenance Departments

Cargo Movers

Security Services

Defence and Police etc.

Major Manufacturers in India include 3M, Honeywell, Sure Safety, Udyogi, JSP etc. to name a few. All these are easily available off the shelf and in all Industrial areas or Major Hardware stores across the country.

Summarising it is the Protection of lives which counts and it is to be ensured that right PPEs are used both by Industry if we need to maintain good health and be safe either while working in the Industry or elsewhere you need to keep your Head above your Shoulders safe.

CHEMISPLASH GOGGLES: TWO IN ONE FOR INDUSTRY AND MEDICAL CARE

“THE BEST MEDICAL PRACTIONERS WEAR THEIR MASKS BELOW THEIR EYES”

The industry has been starving for excellent Eye Protection whether against normal and high speed particles or Chemical Splash or even Molten Metal and this is now compounded with the Covid19 Pandemic which has engulfed the world and lives have been lost as if it’s nobody’s business.

As the Pandemic is far from being controlled, WHO has advised all, whether Medics or Common Men to protect their Eyes as that’s the only thing you can’t keep shut and need to keep it open when you are working or when you are awake. Rest virus entry points can be covered or shut.

Chemisplash Goggles are the answer to such a requirement as you can continue to work with your Eyes Wide open and still stay protected. They are light in weight, cover your complete Eyes, Eyebrow downwards and can be adjusted to be Snug fit so chance of any airborne particles to enter your eyes and being indirectly vented usher in fresh air so that you are comfortable in working for long hours.

EXPERTS VIEW

What does the CDC have to say?

Well, the CDC says that the nose and mouth are the main avenues by which someone catches the virus, but “it may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes.”

On the other hand, Steinemann said, “if you are in close proximity to somebody screaming at you or talking to you or coughing in your face, or if you work in a hospital, suctioning people who is in an intensive care unit — those types of situations are extremely high risk, not only to your nose and your mouth but also to your eyes. In a high-risk situation, I would definitely recommend the use of goggles.”

“Theoretically, you should protect all the mucosal surfaces,” Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told ABC News Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Jennifer Ashton. That includes your nose, mouth, and eyes. “So if you have goggles or an eye shield, you should use it.

How effective are these Chemisplash Goggles?

They are Compact, Lightweight with Indirect Vented Body having Odourless Flexible Frame with Wide and optically clear vision Polycarbonate Lens (99.9% UVA and UVB protection) which is highly resistant to impact from flying particles moving  at 120 m/s (270mph) and is Splash resistance having an Adjustable strap for a snug, customizable fit.

What’s more they can be sanitized, washed with soap or any other mild decontaminants, besides they are reusable many times until they wear off and can then be recycled.

we are manufacturing reusable ppe kit

COVID-19: Gujarat-based company develops reusable PPE kit

sure-safety-ppe

Vadodara-based company, Sure Safety, has developed a reusable personal protective equipment (PPE) kit to fight COVID-19.
Managing director of the company Nishith Dand told THE WEEK that the kits would not only be useful in ensuring the safety of the medical professionals, but will also mitigate the challenge of the biomedical waste generated by the kits that are currently available.
Sure Safety, which, in the past, provided reusable kits to other countries, has made the kits it user-friendly for the medical professionals, and the decontamination process too has been made simpler. Breathing air quality equipment has been added in it, making it convenient for use even when the air quality is poor, Dand said.
The company can produce 50,000 pieces a month and is planning to double the production if required. It is awaiting necessary mandate from the government.
The reusable PPE kits (a set of 10) comes with a decontamination chamber and the one-time cost of installation, including piping, is about Rs 25 lakh to Rs 30 lakh. In case additional reusable PPE kits are to be purchased, it costs around Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000, Dand said. The disposable kit costs around Rs 2,000.
The reusable PPE kits are made up of multi-laminated fibre, anti-static materials and exhalation valves, according to Dand.
He observed that such suits can be of great use as India and the world have been witnessing disasters and pandemics every two to three years. He cited examples of bird flu, SARS, Ebola and Zika virus apart from COVID-19.
Sure Safety, which has so far delivered 60,000 disposable kits to the Union health ministry, had delivered India's first space suit to ISRO in 2015.

Self-contained breathing apparatus

SELF CONTAINED BREATHING APPARATUS

YOU NEED FRESH AIR WHETHER AT WORK OR AT HOME

THE FIRST OF ITS KIND UNDERWATER BREATHING APPARATUS

We all know what a SCUBA diving apparatus is and in many movies we see the Divers wearing this gear and go underwater in search of Pearls or in case of accidents searching or undertaking rescue work for survivors. Here the Cylinder uses regenerated Oxygen for breathing. These are the Closed-Circuit Self-Contained breathing apparatus (CC-SCBA) devices are described as an apparatus of the type in which the exhaled breath is rebreathed by the wearer after the carbon dioxide has been effectively removed and oxygen concentration restored to suitable levels.

Little do many know that similar Apparatus is worn by Industrial Rescuers and Fire Fighters who instead of water enter Smoke Environments in search of survivors who may have either become unconscious or may have collapsed in case of Fire Breaking out in the Building, Market place, Industry and other places where sudden Fire erupts?

So what is this and how and where it is used?

It’s what is known as an Open-circuit industrial breathing sets which are filled with filtered, compressed air, rather than pure oxygen.

A self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), also known as open-circuit rescue or firefighter SCBA and sometimes referred to as a compressed air breathing apparatus (CABA) or simply breathing apparatus (BA),which is a device worn to provide breathable air in an atmosphere that is immediately dangerous to life or health. They are typically used in firefighting and industry.

The term self-contained means that the SCBA is not dependent on a remote supply of breathing gas (e.g., through a long hose). It has a full face mask, regulator, air cylinder, cylinder pressure gauge, remote pressure gauge (sometimes with an integrated PASS device), and a harness with adjustable shoulder straps and waist belt which lets it be worn on the back. The air is supplied through the cylinder which usually comes in one of three standard sizes: 4 litres, 6 litres, or 6.8 litres.

History of Evolution of SCBA-Excerpts

The earliest use of any form of BA was noted in historical texts. One of the earliest attempts was a primitive device – an animal bladder filled with air to assist a diver who, weighted by a stone, sank to the bottom of a river. The main limitation of this system was the extremely short duration of decent due to the small amount of stored air available.

In 1818, a farmer’s barn caught fire in Whitstable in the UK, the farmer tried to extinguish the fire using a small hand-operated water pump, to no avail. John Deane, who was just 18 years of age, removed the helmet from an old suit of armour and placed it on the farmer’s head, attaching the hose previously used for pumping water to the helmet. Deane then used the same hand-operated pump to supply air instead of water to the helmet, and the farmer was able to enter the barn and lead his horses to safety.

LONDON FIRE BRIGADE-1936

In 1879, the notable invention of a regenerative breathing apparatus by a British marine engineer, Henry Fleuss, who managed to create an effective system in a mine rescue operation at Killingworth Colliery.

Even though BA had been in use within the London Fire Brigade since 1913, it was not until 1943 that the Brigade started to consider formalising such use.

Open circuit SCBAs use either "positive pressure" or "negative pressure" operation.

Leading companies in the Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) Market are: 3M Co., Avon Rubber Plc, DEZEGA, Drägerwerk AG & Co. KGaA, Honeywell International Inc., Jiaxing Rongsheng Lifesaving Equipment Co. Ltd., MSA Safety Inc., Oceanco Inc., and Spasciani Spa.

In India the main players are MSA, Scott Safety, Draeger, Honeywell, Sure Safety, Venus, etc. to name a few major players.

Important Note:

Care and maintenance of your SCBA unit are vital steps to staying safe in the hazardous environments you face in your important job.  The best Valentine’s Day present that you can give to your loved ones is coming home to them safe and sound.

[Jaclyn Krah, MA

The global self-contained breathing apparatus market size has the potential to grow by USD 243.79 million at CAGR Of 4.28% during 2020-2024, and the market’s growth momentum will accelerate during the forecast period.

There are 3 main types of Breathing Apparatus – Escape, Self-Contained and Airline.

Escape sets: An Emergency escape equipment, allowing between 10 and 15 minutes of breathable air helps escape to a safe place and is normally used in areas where regular BA sets cannot be accommodated due to size constraints as in confined spaces and work is carried out using Airlines and an Escape set is worn by the user to move out in emergency situations.

Confined spaces work, for example:

Silos / Sewers / Ships holds /Storage tanks / ISO containers etc.

Work activities requiring Respiratory Protection include;

Welding / Sand/grit blasting / Boiler/tank inspections / Cleaning using solvents /Ship tank cleaning/inspection / Spraying /Chemical/nuclear material handling / Dusts etc.

Conformity to suitable standards:

All BA and associated equipment and rescue gear to suitable internationally recognised quality standards like EN, NFPA, BIS, ISO etc.

What’s important here is to note that Air (A mix of Oxygen and other gases) and not only oxygen is important for staying alive. Oxygen only is administered in Medical Emergencies under Medical Supervision but at the same time there are certain non-medical situations which may require External Air support system to either work or Rescue or combat emergencies. SCBA is the answer to such situations and proper use of SCBA needs to be understood so that it supports life.

The Industries which use these products are;

Fire Brigades

Airports

Railways

All Industries

Defence & Para Military

Police

Disaster Management Authorities etc.

The Government needs to be stringent in implementing its recommendations for proper use with the Industry and with Fire departments but it is for the individual and the organization which needs to implement the use of the right product which is properly tested and certified for the right application. Use of Carbon Composite Air storage cylinders make these equipment Light in weight and comfortable to use by all where required.

Pandemics or no Pandemics Fire is here to stay and so is smoke as a result of Fire so  SCBA is also here to stay but what is important is the right purchase of the product and proper training to use it in emergent times.
